Takayama Ramen is everything ramen should be. Juicy succulent pork, a soft boiled egg with a runny yolk, rich savoury soy sauce broth and thin curly noodles, with a satisfying texture to soak up the flavour and a sprinkling of onions and leaks. A truly unbeatable lunch!

Back in the diner where we shot the Dr Jelly commercial on Day three of Journey Across Japan. We had a challenge to shoot a commercial in a day and the Takayama Showa Museum with the 1950’s diner couldn’t have been any more perfect as the ideal backdrop!

Takayama often feels like a mini-Kyoto as you wander through the Edo era architecture and the bustling streets filled with traditional townhouses. Have a stroll through the town, munch on freshly grilled skewers of Hida Wagyu and sip on the local sake as you step back in time.

Hida Beef is one of the finest cuts of Wagyu you can taste in Japan. Mouthwateringly buttery, rich in fat and marbled to perfection, whether you’re enjoying an A5 Wagyu Sirloin steak, a freshly grilled skewer on the street or an upmarket Sukiyaki dinner, it’s Takayama’s must-try dish!

My favourite museum in Japan happens to be in Takayama. The Showa Kan retro museum takes you back to the 1950s and 60’s, with streets, shops, classrooms and homes recreated and packed full of incredible memorabilia. Discover Japan past and present and get lost in the sprawling retro museum!

The Old Town area of Takayama City is a beautiful scenic spot, which takes you back to the Edo Period. During the daytime, this place is bustling with people exploring the neighbourhood spots and restaurants, but once the evening hits it’s rather quiet and peaceful.
